Overview
OpenGem is a free, open-source AI API gateway that turns one or more Google accounts into a local, load-balanced Gemini gateway. It exposes the native Gemini API shape and also accepts OpenAI Chat Completions, OpenAI Responses, Anthropic Messages and OpenRouter-style requests, so most SDKs can point at the OpenGem server with only a base URL change.
It is designed for personal, educational and research usage. The operator runs the gateway, connects their own Google accounts, creates their own API keys, and monitors usage from the admin console. That console is a Next.js application with a setup wizard, dashboard, logs, requests, API keys, documentation, settings and a chat playground.
Routing is handled by an adaptive balancer that scores local in-flight work, account health, recent 429/quota signals, Retry-After headers, latency, Pro account status and affinity bindings before choosing a Google account. Storage uses a local SQLite backend built on Node.js node:sqlite, with optional Firebase Firestore as an alternative.
The backend is Express with TypeScript, while the UI is a static Next.js export; npm start serves the API routes and the built Next UI from the same port. Security features include hashed API keys, JWT admin sessions, optional SMTP email 2FA, rate limiting and Helmet headers.
