Overview

MindShell is an open-source graphical Agent workbench that supports free integration of mainstream large model APIs, providing a fully visualized execution environment for very long, heavy code tasks. It is described as a Web-first complete interface where windows, tasks, steps, permissions, and processes are managed on one screen, not a command-line wrapper but a console designed for long-term use. The project is currently in early alpha.

The system uses an Event Log as its single source of truth, natively recording tool calls, permission decisions, process states, and checkpoints so the interface can be rebuilt from facts after a page refresh, a machine change, or a crash. Edits are controlled: relevant code is located first, structured modifications are bound to the file state just read, and the file is re-checked before writing; if the file has changed, the system stops rather than overwriting. Verification results are labeled focused, package, workspace, or full and bound to the workspace state at the time.

Permissions are governed by R0–R4 risk grading, a kernel-level Hardline, and three approval modes. The long-task architecture includes Task Lease, Checkpoint, Runtime Session reconstruction, and Context Compaction; recovery reconciles events, files, permissions, and processes before continuing in a new session and lease, and does not replay side effects with unknown results. MindShell plans to be released under the Apache-2.0 license, and the current repository is mainly for design review and kernel implementation validation, not recommended for production use.

Use Cases

  • Teams use MindShell to run very long, heavy code tasks in a fully visualized execution environment.
  • Developers use MindShell to locate relevant code and bind structured edits to the file state just read, stopping if the file has changed.
  • Teams use MindShell to set boundaries with R0–R4 risk grading, kernel-level Hardline, and three approval modes.
  • Users use MindShell to recover from interruptions without replaying side effects whose results are unknown.
  • Teams use MindShell to audit every step through an Event Log that natively records tool calls, permission decisions, process states, and checkpoints.
  • Developers use MindShell to verify changes with focused, package, workspace, or full verification bound to the workspace state at the time.
  • Teams use MindShell to keep long-term memory small and traceable, with Skills indexed on demand and fixed to a source and version.
