OpenRouter Model Picker is a browser-based tool that helps users find OpenRouter models matching a described task, a price ceiling, and a quality bar. It pulls live price and benchmark data for every OpenRouter model that fits the criteria. A free model then reads the shortlist and writes up which one it would use and why. The tool uses an OpenRouter API key stored only in the browser's local storage and sent only to openrouter.ai. It offers task presets, editable task descriptions, options to show free models only, maximum prompt and completion prices per 1M tokens, and optimization for best quality, balanced quality per dollar, or cheapest. Users can compare up to six models, inspect the ranking formula, and share a public snapshot. Links and exports exclude the API key, task description, and judge response. Saved names stay in the browser. The tool has no backend; every request goes from the page directly to openrouter.ai. Model list and pricing come from /api/v1/models, and benchmark scores from /api/v1/benchmarks. The judging call targets a model whose token price is $0, so getting the recommendation costs nothing. A $0 token price is not always a free model: one billed per song, clip, or image still reports $0 per token, so those are marked metered and left out of a free-only search rather than shown as free. The tool is MIT licensed.
