Overview

OPENCNTX is a local-first tool for keeping project knowledge and giving AI only the context it needs. It is intended to avoid explaining a project from scratch in every new AI conversation, by keeping useful knowledge locally, selecting context for one task, and retaining a clear place to resume. The project describes three places with clear jobs: a local workspace for context, sources, decisions, skills, agent instructions, technical knowledge, evidence and roadmaps; GitHub as a recommended remote copy for selected files and version history; and a notes app as a readable view for explanations, linked knowledge, progress and roadmaps.

OPENCNTX packages and verifies files. The current release also provides a local knowledge layer for hierarchical sources, full-text search, typed links, explainable results, technique memory, safe adoption and provider-neutral footers. It does not run an AI or interpret chat intent. Installation requires Python 3.11–3.14, Git and pipx, and no account, API key or built-in model is required. Commands include opencntx init, opencntx pack -- preview, opencntx pack, and opencntx verify.

Users choose files in opencntx.toml and inspect .opencntx/latest/CONTEXT.md before sharing. Verification proves matching bytes, not truth or task success, and the user decides what leaves the computer. GitHub holds only committed and pushed files, and the notes app is a presentation layer, not a second OPENCNTX store.
