Overview
islamqa-org-mcp is a Model Context Protocol server that lets Claude, Codex and other MCP clients search the IslamQA.org archive. The archive contains answers from 47 darul ifta institutions, and each result carries the institution, madhhab, mufti and a link to the original page. The project reports 98,634 indexed answers across 4 madhahib and is MIT licensed.
The server exposes tools for full-text search, retrieving a single fatwa, listing sources, browsing recent answers, checking index status, and rebuilding the index. Search can be filtered by madhhab or institution. The first search builds a local index using about a minute and 22 requests to the sitemap; later searches are instant and offline. Installation is available through Claude Code, Claude Desktop and other clients, or via npx.
A bundled Claude skill adds guidance: it asks the user's madhhab before answering or lays out all four positions, refuses to invent hadith, scholarly positions or Arabic citations not found in a retrieved fatwa, and reports when the archive has nothing. It also keeps categories and admits thin coverage. The server is designed to read public pages carefully, with one request per second serialised globally, a bulk pass that reads the sitemap rather than 98,000 pages, 90-day answer caching, a real User-Agent, and a lock to one host. The site notes that a search result is not a ruling on a user's situation and that a language model relaying one is not a scholar.
