Overview
Casefile is a self-hosted MCP server and web board that maintains a case file for every task. It records the decisions, failed attempts, findings, and open questions that agents write down as they work. When a session ends, the next session—whether the same agent, an agent from another vendor, or a person—reads the latest summary and open questions and carries on. The system is MIT-licensed and does not assign or schedule work. It is designed for agents that work on tasks spanning multiple sessions, and it supports Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and any other MCP client. Casefile runs locally in Docker and listens on localhost only, so nothing leaves the computer unless sign-in is enabled and it is placed on a server for team use. It provides guardrails such as requiring a summary and a passed verdict per check before closing a task, and preventing the start of blocked tasks. The tool is not a notes file, memory server, issue tracker, or orchestrator; it is an append-only work log per task, read in a fixed order.

Use Cases
- Teams use Casefile to hand off tasks between agent sessions without re-discovery.
- Developers use Casefile to let agents create and split tasks, record decisions and dead ends, ask questions, and close with a verdict on every check.
- Users use Casefile to stay in the loop via a live board and task pages that show what every agent is doing.
- Teams use Casefile to enforce guardrails such as no closing without a summary and a passed verdict per check, and no starting a blocked task.
- Users use Casefile to keep work local on their machine, with nothing leaving the computer unless sign-in is enabled and it is put on a server.
- Teams use Casefile to connect agents like Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor via MCP, with the installer handling OAuth sign-in.
- Users use Casefile to let agents file tasks with all their sections and checks, each small enough for one agent to finish in one go.
- Teams use Casefile to have agents carry out tasks from the tracker, handing them to agents one task per agent to save context.
