Overview

Bender is a self-hosted personal AI agent that combines a markdown wiki, a Things-style task manager, and a universal assistant in Telegram, all driven by a single agent. It runs on a subscription rather than API keys, using either Claude Max via the Claude Agent SDK or ChatGPT Plus/Pro via the Codex SDK; the engine is chosen at install time and can be switched with one line in .env.

The system includes task management with Inbox/Today/Upcoming/Someday, projects, tags, deadlines, checklists, repeating tasks, logbook, drag-and-drop, hotkeys, and PWA, with live sync over SSE. Its wiki is a personal knowledge base of markdown files with Confluence-style hierarchy, links by name, trash with undo, and live sync. It also provides personal file storage, an epub/pdf reader with highlights and an in-book agent, a web chat and Telegram bot sharing one session, scheduling via cron jobs, long-term memory, self-authored skills, and subagents for research and wiki reorganization.

Storage consists of files and SQLite on a volume: content/ for the markdown wiki, data/ for tasks, cron, memory, skills, and session, and files/ for personal file storage. Quick start requires Docker; the installer asks which subscription to run on, handles credentials, pulls images, brings the stand up, and checks backend, agent authentication, and bot reachability.
