BetterAIChat2 (codename Nova) is a local-first Android AI agent and the successor rewrite of BetterAIChat. It is described as having a new architecture, a new UI, and an Agent Runtime oriented toward device operation. API keys are encrypted with the Android Keystore and remain on the device; the project states there is no cloud, no telemetry, and no account required. The AI operates the phone through function calling, including viewing the screen, tapping, typing, reading and writing files, setting reminders, and running automations. The application provides 56 built-in tools covering accessibility operations, screenshot OCR, files, network, personal assistant functions, and Shizuku shell. It is model-agnostic, supporting DeepSeek, OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, Kimi, Qwen, GLM, MiniMax, Ollama, and any compatible gateway. Four modes are offered, ranging from pure chat to item-by-item confirmation to autonomous operation with budget constraints. Unattended operation is supported through scheduled tasks, foreground services, sub-agents, MCP remote tools, and Skills. Requirements are Android 8.0 (API 26) and above, with no GMS dependency and no statistics SDK; cleartext HTTP is allowed only for loopback addresses. The project notes it is a different application from the older BetterAIChat (different package name, no data interop) and can be installed alongside it. The source is licensed GPL-3.0-or-later, and the project states it is developed with participation from an AI coding assistant (opencode), with requirements, review, and release handled by human maintainers.
