Overview

zagent is a coding-agent terminal for the GLM engine, designed to drive an installed ZCode runtime from the shell. It provides a streaming TUI, tool calls, checkpoints, and quota insight. The product is an unofficial tool that is not affiliated with or endorsed by Z.ai, and it ships no Z.ai binaries; instead, it drives the ZCode runtime that the user has already installed on their own account. zagent supplies the missing @zcode/tui module through a Node ESM resolve hook, allowing the runtime to be read in place without copying, patching, or writing into its install root. It requires Node.js version 22.15 or higher, a ZCode runtime install, and a GLM Coding Plan. The tool offers both an interactive TUI and headless operation via command-line flags, with features such as quota management, session handling, per-turn diffs, memory, scheduled prompts, and plugins. It runs on the user's own GLM Coding Plan and installed runtime, with nothing bundled or phoned home. Cross-platform runtime discovery is supported on Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Use Cases

  • Developers use zagent to run headless one-shot prompts for scripts, CI, and pipelines.
  • Teams use zagent to undo any turn and restore files changed by a turn from real checkpoints.
  • Users use zagent to monitor their spending with quota status showing the 5-hour window, plan level, and reset time.
  • Teams use zagent to schedule agents via local cron and server-side automation schedules that run prompts when they are not there.
  • Users use zagent to get usage analytics with per-model/per-tool breakdowns, cache-hit rate, and streaks.
  • Developers use zagent to import Claude Code instructions, commands, and skills.
  • Other agents use zagent as MCP tools over stdio to call zagent_turn, zagent_quota, zagent_models, and zagent_doctor.
