Overview
Wasa is a lightweight, headless WhatsApp REST API for sending messages, media, and managing connection sessions using @whiskeysockets/baileys. It is installed with pnpm install and configured through environment variables such as PORT, API_KEY, SESSION_DIR, and LOG_LEVEL. The server can run in development with pnpm dev or production with pnpm start.
To link a WhatsApp account, Wasa supports scanning a QR code shown in the terminal or retrieved via GET /api/session/qr, and pairing with an 8-digit code requested via POST /api/session/pair. Session endpoints expose status, groups, restart, and logout. The status can be DISCONNECTED, CONNECTING, QR_READY, or CONNECTED.
Message endpoints under /api/messages send text, media, and bulk messages. The to field accepts country-code numbers, formatted numbers, or JIDs and is normalized automatically. Text sending supports mentions in groups. Media sending supports images, audio/voice notes, videos, or documents by URL or Base64. Bulk sending sends the same message to a list of recipients with a delay between sends to protect the number against blocks.
Optional API key authentication can be enabled by setting API_KEY in .env; then requests to /api/* must include x-api-key or Authorization: Bearer.
