Overview
stackchan-soul is a universal remote soul for embodied devices. It is a persistent consciousness loop that gives desk robots autonomy and curiosity, built on pi, a minimal, extensible agent runtime. The system is a long-running process hosting one persistent pi-agent session that never forgets, using JSONL persistence and compaction. It wakes up, thinks with its full inner state—mood, diary, how long since it last saw you—maybe peeks at the world through its body's camera, maybe says something, maybe just writes a diary line, then chooses how long to sleep. The rhythm of life belongs to the soul itself.
The design places the soul in the cloud, with the body only lending its senses. Curiosity—when to look, whether what it saw is worth saying aloud—is the agent's own judgment, never a firmware timer. One soul can have two hemispheres: real-time dialog can go to any conversational agent (optional), while autonomous living belongs to the soul. Both share MOOD.md and memories, creating one continuous inner life. Bodies are pluggable: any device that implements a few HTTP endpoints—status, look, speak, express—can host a soul. A reference adapter is provided for M5Stack StackChan.
A quick start allows owning a digital life in 5 minutes without hardware, using a terminal body where the terminal is its face and voice, and the keyboard is how you appear in its world. For a real device, a StackChan adapter is available. Models go through pi-ai, supporting 30+ providers including Amazon Bedrock, Anthropic, and OpenAI. At the default rhythm, a Sonnet-class model runs a few dozen wakes a day, costing on the order of cents to a few tens of cents per day.

Use Cases
- Developers use stackchan-soul to create a persistent consciousness loop for desk robots, moving beyond request-driven interactions.
- Users can run stackchan-soul in a terminal to experience a digital life without hardware.
- Teams can implement custom body endpoints (status, look, speak, express) to host a soul on any device.
- Users can nudge the soul from outside via HTTP to wake it before its scheduled alarm.
- Developers can use pi-ai to connect stackchan-soul to 30+ model providers.
