Overview
sap-sales-order-mcp is a production-ready MCP server for SAP S/4HANA Sales Order Management. It is sandbox-first, offline-testable, and built on FastMCP. The project is a reference implementation showing how to build a maintainable, testable MCP server that connects Claude or any MCP client to an enterprise system. It uses the public SAP API Business Hub sandbox, so no on-prem SAP install is needed.
The server exposes four tools: list_sales_orders, get_sales_order, get_sales_order_items, and search_orders_by_customer. These support paginated lists with optional filters, single order headers by ID, line items, and a convenience wrapper for all orders for a specific customer. Each tool has boundary descriptions with USE WHEN and DO NOT use guidance to help Claude select the right tool on ambiguous requests.
The repository emphasizes offline-first testing, structured errors, retry policy, lazy imports, and path-scoped rules. Unit tests and --selftest run against a MockSAPClient with realistic OData v2 fixtures without an API key or network. Live tests are opt-in via LIVE_TESTS=1. Every failure returns a ToolError with errorCategory and isRetryable rather than a bare "failed" string. The project also includes a tool-selection-reliability harness and documentation for setup, architecture, examples, and next steps.
