Hermes Agent is a self-improving AI agent built by Nous Research. According to the documentation, it is described as "The only agent with a built-in learning loop — it creates skills from experience, improves them during use, nudges itself to persist knowledge, and builds a deepening model of who you are across sessions." Rather than a coding copilot tied to an IDE or a chatbot wrapper around a single API, it is presented as "an autonomous agent that gets more capable the longer it runs."

The agent can run in a range of environments. The docs state that "It lives wherever you put it — a $5 VPS, a GPU cluster, or serverless infrastructure (Daytona, Modal) that costs nearly nothing when idle." It supports seven terminal backends (local, Docker, SSH, Daytona, Singularity, Modal, Vercel Sandbox) and can be reached from more than 20 messaging platforms through a single gateway, including CLI, Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, Matrix, and Microsoft Teams.

Hermes Agent ships with a broad built-in tool registry. "Tools are functions that extend the agent's capabilities. They're organized into logical toolsets that can be enabled or disabled per platform." Categories include web search and extraction, terminal and file operations, browser automation, media generation, agent orchestration, memory and recall, scheduled tasks, and MCP or plugin integrations.

The agent also maintains persistent memory. "Hermes Agent has bounded, curated memory that persists across sessions. This lets it remember your preferences, your projects, your environment, and things it has learned." Memory is stored in two files, MEMORY.md and USER.md, with character limits, and is injected into the system prompt as a frozen snapshot at session start.
