Overview
pixellab-cli is a command-line tool for generating 2D game assets. It produces sprites, characters with eight rotations, animations, tilesets, UI panels, pixel fonts and portraits through PixelLab's REST v2 API, while concept images and box art come from GPT Image 2.5 on fal. The tool requires uv and Python 3.12 or newer and is installed with `uv tool install pixellab-cli`. Setup is handled by `pixellab-cli setup`, which offers detected agent harnesses such as Claude Code, Codex, and opencode, installs the skill where each reads it, and asks for credentials that are not already set. Credentials come from two providers: PIXELLAB_SECRET from the PixelLab account page and FAL_KEY from the fal dashboard. Either can live in an environment variable or in a .pixellab.json file, and four places are consulted per credential, first hit winning. Every call that costs money is estimated before it is made, recorded after it resolves, and written to disk beside a manifest that says how the file was produced. No paid route runs without --yes; without it the command prints what it would call, what it would send, and what it is estimated to cost, and sends nothing. The tool can create characters, animate them, generate tilesets, objects, UI panels, fonts, and box art, and it supports recipes that sequence steps across both providers. Output goes to a pixellab-out directory containing a ledger.jsonl and per-run manifests, and nothing is ever overwritten. The ledger records every call before it is made and again when it resolves, and `pixellab-cli balance` shows what is left to spend on both providers.
