nightshade

NightShade is an open-source, terminal-based AI coding agent powered by Mistral AI. It is a Claude Code-style agentic CLI that reads, edits, and runs code, running entirely on Mistral models such as Devstral, Codestral, and Mistral Large. The project describes itself as a free, open-source AI coding agent for the terminal and an autonomous pair programmer that understands a codebase and edits files and runs commands to complete engineering tasks.

The agent accepts tasks in plain English. It reads relevant files, plans work, makes edits with reviewable diffs, runs tests, and iterates, asking for permission before touching anything that matters. It includes file tools, search tools, a bash tool, web fetch and search, subagents, task tracking, permission modes, MCP support, hooks, session persistence, cost and context tracking, custom commands, layered settings, project memory, and model routing. It can run in interactive REPL or one-shot mode for scripts and CI.

NightShade requires Node.js 18 or later and a Mistral API key. It is MIT licensed and has a zero-dependency node:test suite covering core modules. It can connect to any Model Context Protocol server and supports shell hooks that can block actions.
