Overview

Godot AI Sidebar is an AI game-development agent that lives inside the Godot 4 editor. It reads the scene tree and selection, asks before guessing, edits scripts surgically, records every change in Godot's own undo history, and can inspect the game while it is running. The plugin collects the open scene, selected node, and current script as context for the model automatically, so users do not have to paste their scene tree into the chat. For large changes, the agent proposes a plan with the goal, files, steps, and verification method; until the user presses Apply Plan, every tool that could modify the project is blocked in code. Every scene and node mutation goes through Godot's own EditorUndoRedoManager, so Ctrl+Z works exactly as it does for manual edits. The plugin registers an EditorDebuggerPlugin and an autoload bridge, allowing the agent to query the live scene tree of the running game, inspect runtime errors, and map stack traces back to source files. It also provides tools to drive and measure the running game, such as sending input, waiting for runtime conditions, sampling performance, tracing signals, auditing UI, diagnosing physics, and injecting runtime properties. A path policy blocks traversal outside the project and protects sensitive files, and write and delete operations can require explicit approval through three modes: MANUAL, AUTO, and FULL_AUTO.

Use Cases

  • Teams use Godot AI Sidebar to create a playable hex grid map system by having the agent ask clarifying questions and then write the scene and script.
  • Developers use Godot AI Sidebar to make surgical one-line changes in large scripts without rewriting the entire file.
  • Teams use Godot AI Sidebar to plan and build system-sized features like an inventory system, with a plan that must be approved before any project modification.
  • Developers use Godot AI Sidebar to debug a running game by inspecting the live scene tree, runtime node values, and engine errors.
  • Teams use Godot AI Sidebar to drive and measure the running game by sending input sequences, waiting for conditions, and sampling performance.
  • Developers use Godot AI Sidebar to audit runtime UI for off-screen, overflowing, overlapping, or low-contrast text.
  • Teams use Godot AI Sidebar to diagnose physics issues such as layer/mask mismatches, disabled shapes, or monitoring off.
  • Developers use Godot AI Sidebar to inject runtime property values to test win or game-over states without playing for minutes.
