Overview

The Flood Risk Assistant — Bangladesh is a project that provides a conversational agent to answer flood-risk questions for districts in Bangladesh. It is built by Farjana Ferdausi as a submission for the Google Cloud Gen AI Academy APAC Edition (Cohort 3). The project uses real river-discharge data from the Open-Meteo Flood API, which is powered by the Global Flood Awareness System (GloFAS) and provides simulated river discharge at ~5 km resolution from 1984 to a 7-month forecast. The data is processed with Pandas and stored in Google BigQuery for querying. The agent layer uses Google ADK and Gemini to query BigQuery, apply a district-relative flood-risk classification, and answer in conversational Bengali. The risk classification compares the latest discharge against each district's own trailing 365-day 75th and 90th percentiles, categorizing risk as High, Elevated, or Normal. The project covers 10 flood-prone districts: Dhaka, Sirajganj, Bogura, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Rangpur, Jamalpur, Faridpur, Sylhet, and Chattogram. It is a decision-support aid, not an official flood warning, and users should defer to Bangladesh's Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) for official alerts.

Use Cases

  • Teams use the agent to ask flood-risk questions in Bengali and receive answers based on real river-discharge data.
  • Developers use the data ingestion scripts to fetch river discharge data for 10 flood-prone districts and load it into BigQuery.
  • Users can run the demo script to test the agent with sample Bengali questions and see tool calls to BigQuery.
  • Data scientists can extend the list of districts by editing the districts configuration file.
  • Organizations can use the risk classification to identify districts at high or elevated flood risk based on their own historical discharge percentiles.
