Overview
exchange-data-mcp is a read-only market data MCP server for crypto exchanges that uses only public endpoints, requiring no API keys or accounts. It normalizes data from Binance, KuCoin, and Coinbase into a single shape and serializes it for LLM context. The package can be used as an MCP server for agent clients or as a plain Python library with zero dependencies.
The project addresses the need for agents that work with markets to access order books, trades, and candles without dealing with raw exchange JSON. Raw payloads often contain unnecessary data, and this package normalizes the dialects once and serializes them more easily. It handles symbol dialects by aggregating formats like BTC-USDT and BTCUSDT into a canonical BASE-QUOTE form. Timestamp units are normalized to milliseconds since epoch, and candle row orders are correctly mapped for each exchange.
Rate limits are managed with a per-endpoint TTL cache that collapses concurrent misses into a single request (single-flight), so multiple tools reading the same book in the same second cost one HTTP call. Spread math runs on Decimal end to end, and slim serializers keep exact decimal strings under short keys. The MCP server exposes tools: get_ticker, get_orderbook, get_recent_trades, get_candles, and compare_price. Errors are profiled as retryable, fix-the-input, or the-exchange-changed-something. The project includes 37 tests that run fully offline against recorded fixtures. It is intended for portfolio purposes and provides REST with a TTL cache.
