Overview
dumbdiscordbot is an AI-driven Discord bot designed to interact with members through an OpenAI-compatible model provider and to execute configurable tools. The project is currently in a preparation state: the repository contains the architecture, conventions, and skeleton, while the functional bot and its tools are planned for a later stage. The approach is inspired by Hermes-Agent, using an agentic loop that receives context, optionally calls tools, observes their results, and then responds to the user. The project does not reuse Hermes-Agent code.
The bot requires Bun, a Discord bot created in the Developer Portal, and an OpenAI-compatible model server. Ollama is the default local example, and the AI layer is managed by TanStack AI. Configuration variables OPENAI_BASE_URL, OPENAI_API_KEY, and OPENAI_MODEL allow targeting Ollama or any other compatible endpoint. The Code Mode of TanStack AI uses native QuickJS via Bun to execute generated code in a limited isolate, with security parameters configurable through CODE_MODE_* variables.
Sessions for follow-up conversations are persisted in SQLite via the native bun:sqlite module, with the default path ./data/sessions.sqlite. Observability with PostHog is enabled when POSTHOG_API_KEY is set, using native AI Observability events and MCP Analytics to link each Discord request, generation, and tool call in a single trace. Prompts, responses, and tool payloads are masked by default. The bot can be deployed via Docker, with the image automatically built and published to GitHub Container Registry.
