AUTOPILOT

AUTOPILOT is a local-first autonomous coding agent that operates on a git repository. It is pointed at a folder and, upon activation, orients itself in the repository, selects the most valuable task it can complete, implements it, runs the project's own verification gate (typecheck, lint, test, build), commits if the gate passes, and reports the outcome. This cycle repeats within a user-defined budget. The tool runs on the user's own Claude subscription through the local Claude Code CLI, requiring no API key and incurring no per-token bill. Nothing leaves the machine, and nothing lands unverified. The unit of work is called a 'firing'—one gated attempt at one task. A firing proceeds through four stages: orientation, task selection, implementation, and gate evaluation. A green gate commits the work; a red gate reverts it. Both outcomes are recorded locally with cost, tokens, gate verdict, and commit SHA. AUTOPILOT is designed for developers, contributors, researchers, and companies evaluating local-first agents. It is currently in public beta (version 0.58.0) and is provided under the Apache-2.0 license. The project emphasizes transparency: every firing, gate verdict, ship, revert, and dollar is recorded and published in a living self-study paper, including failures. The tool is built on 495 open-source projects and includes a dashboard for monitoring flights.
