Overview

ainess is a desktop application that runs AI coding CLIs already installed on a machine as a team. It supports eight CLIs: Claude Code, Antigravity, GitHub Copilot CLI, Gemini, Codex, opencode, Ollama, and Aider. The app does not bundle any model or API key; it drives the CLIs the user already has, with their existing sessions. The interface is available in seven languages and follows the system language unless overridden. The app is developed and tested on Windows.

Agents are one-shot CLI processes, and each invocation is a run. The conversation survives across runs because each provider is resumed by its own session id. Agents form a hierarchy with roles: Planner, Implementer, and Reviewer. The planner reasons, splits work, and delegates by emitting a fenced block; the orchestrator parses it, starts a run for that agent, and feeds the child's final answer back into the planner's session as a result. That cycle is a round, with a configurable maximum per task. An agent can also stop and ask the user a question via an ask block, and the run continues in the same session after an answer.

The app includes a project board with six columns from backlog to done, drag-and-drop, and a dependency graph. It supports git worktrees so agents can work in isolation, real terminals, approvals, autonomous mode for unattended runs, spending limits, quota tracking, notifications, and search. A phone interface is available on the same WiFi, allowing users to send tasks, stop runs, approve delegations, and answer questions. The app never asks for, stores, or reads API keys; sessions and keys stay where each CLI keeps them.
